Bio

About the Artist

J. Renee is a native of New Orleans, but spent most of her childhood north in Memphis, TN. Upon receiving a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Xavier University. J. Renee investigated different aspects of fine art and concentrated in painting and printmaking. J.Renee's first major public exhibition was in 1991, with renowned artist William Toliver at the Festival International in Lafayette, Louisiana. Grammy Award winning musician and producer, Daniel Lanois, commissioned J' Renee to paint a mural. J'Renee was also commissioned by RCA Records to do a painting for Delfeayo Marsalis' first solo release album cover, “Pontius Pilate’s Decision”. Many of her works are on permanent display at Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA., as well as, the W.E.B. Dubois Museum in Ghana, West Africa and the McKenna Museum in New Orleans. This past year her work was accepted at a Haitian exhibit honoring the 400 year experience of Haiti at the United Nations in New York. She has had several exhibitions in New York this past year including her last one at the Mo CADA Museum in Brooklyn, NY. The artistry of J’Renee has been known to be owned by several celebrities such as; Quincy Jones, Bobby Short, Arte Neville of the Neville Brothers, Wynton Marsalis, Tina Marie, actress Lisa Nicole Carson and Vanessa Williams-Wiseman, among others. Her work was also highlighted in the movie Eve’s Bayou, T.V. show What Not to Wear, and has been featured in the publication Southern Living in multiple issues. In August of 2010 her story of her life post and pre Hurricane Katrina was featured on the Ebony/Jet.com web magazine for the 5th anniversary of Katrina, which was reissued for Ebony’s 65th anniversary edition this past November 2010.

J’Renee’s first introduction to Washington, D.C. was when she was commission back in the early 90’s to produce a mural of a bright and colorful street scene, entitled “A U Street Jam” for Soul Brothers Pizza located in the historic 14th & U Street area. It was later place at Mango’s Restaurant which is now currently called “Gin”. The owners are now looking for a third home for the mural. When J’Renee researched the history of U Street and the revitalization taking place in the area at that time her mural was a vision of what U Street could become. Years later it is as if the mural “ A U Street Jam” came to life. She is hoping her art contribution to the historic H Street here at Tru Orleans Restaurant and Gallery will also breathe a new life and excitement to the area.

My Design philosophy

J'Renee's art is a celebration of her existence and the essence of her African American experience. Her works are dramatic combinations of exciting abstract colors embracing a backdrop of ethnic patterns, motifs, tropical settings and colorful figures/portraitures. The art is about the outward appearance of beauty and sensuality which radiates from ones positive strength and inner beauty, strength of spirit, soul and character. Reverse glass painting is hundreds of years old, and she is working to revive a classic style that challenges the techniques of traditional painting.

My Inspiration

Many people of color from all over the African Diaspora have a history of struggle, daily hardships and painful realities. When observing the work, J'Renee wants the viewer to look past their pain and look inward at themselves, finding a place of peace and beauty. When looking at themselves in the mirrors and the windows of J'Renee's world, she wants them to feel good about themselves.
